By the end of the day, despite Nikki’s extensive search, there was nothing to indicate that somewhere among the legion of fans was a killer.

Feeling fatigue threatening to overwhelm her, she decided to head home for the evening.

She’d already started making the journey towards her cottage when she paused on the open lane.

She felt like the past was threatening to drag her back. Anyone would tell her that it wasn’t healthy. Rhys is gone. Nothing’s going to bring him back.

She wasn’t afraid of being alone. She’d had several scumbags turning up on her doorstep declaring war, and she’d taken on every single one of them and won.

But she needed to start looking ahead. She was building a life with Dean. They’d already made it through the difficult part of letting each other see them wounded. Dean had been exposed to the full extent of her past and hadn’t backed away while so many others might have. And though it’d taken time, he’d shared with her the life he was trying to outrun.

She parked up as close as she could to Dean’s house and took in a deep breath as she gathered her things and made her way down the street, his key clasped tightly in her hands. With how busy the case had suddenly become, she couldn’t wait to collapse into his arms and feel everything else just melt away.

The minute Olivia stepped through the front door of Dean’s house and into his hallway, she felt her body relax. All the stress that had coursed through her veins evaporated as she eased herself out of her shoes and followed the aroma of something cooking in the kitchen.

DI Lawrence had his back to her, strong shoulders hunched over the cooker with some saxophonist blaring out a jazz tune from his Bluetooth speakers.

He did a little shimmy as tasted the ragu he was working on.

“Perfect,” she heard him mumble, and it warmed her soul. Coming home to him was always going to do that for her. No matter how hard her day was.

He wiped his hands on the stripped blue and white apron he had tied around himself and turned to check his phone, jumping as he noticed her watching him from the doorway.

The smile that spread across his handsome face made her rush forwards and wrap her arms around his neck.

He took a moment to steady himself before snaking his own arms around her waist.

“Everything okay?” he asked eventually, peeling her away just enough so that he could see her face. “The case wearing you down?”

They knew home was a work-free environment now, but they weren’t always able to stick to that rule.

Tonight, though, she didn't want to think about bodies and bee stings. She wanted to concentrate on him only.

“Nothing that you need to be worried about,” she answered, moving so she could look behind him. “Smells good.”

He gave a light laugh.

“I didn’t know you’d be back so early. It was supposed to be a surprise meal.” He pulled his hand away to trace it down her face, pushing a few strands of hair back behind her ear.
